No heating and no hot water
Usually electrical supply, a lock-out, a failed pump, an airlocked system or a seized diverter. We check power and fault codes first, then pump operation and system pressure, then the gas side with a manometer before condemning any component.
Hot water but no heating (or the reverse)
Classic diverter valve territory on a combi — either the valve head has failed or the valve body is sticking with sludge. On a system boiler it more often points to a motorised valve, cylinder stat or wiring centre fault.
Losing pressure
We pressure-test and trace: visible joints, radiator valves and tails, the pressure relief valve discharge outside (a dripping discharge pipe is the giveaway), and the expansion vessel charge. Recharging or replacing a flat expansion vessel resolves a large share of these.
Fault codes and lock-outs
Ignition lock-outs point to gas supply, electrode, spark lead or fan and pressure switch. Overheat lock-outs point to flow restriction — sludge, a closed valve, a failing pump or a scaled heat exchanger. The code narrows it; the testing confirms it.
Frozen condensate and winter faults
A boiler that fails on the first hard frost and shows a condensate or ignition-related code is usually a frozen external condensate run. We thaw and clear it, then re-route, upsize or insulate the pipe so the same freeze doesn't repeat every January.
Noise: kettling, banging and whistling
Kettling is scale or sludge causing local boiling. Depending on severity we descale, cleanse or power flush, fit a magnetic filter and inhibitor, and re-balance. Where the exchanger is already damaged we'll say so honestly rather than flushing a lost cause.
